A surgeon opens a scan recorded four hundred kilometres away. A clearing house settles the day’s payments. A dispatcher moves a freight train through the night. Between the intention and the outcome lies a strand of glass thinner than a human hair, two metres beneath a road you have driven a thousand times.
We put it there. We measure the ground, cut the trench, pull the duct, splice the fibre to five hundredths of a decibel — and then we watch it, every span, every hour, for the next twenty-five years.
Infrastructure is not a product. It is a promise with a very long expiry date.

Survey
Before anything is designed, the ground is measured. RTK GNSS traverse, buried-utility detection, geotechnical sampling and a route walked on foot — because the map is never the territory.

Design
Route selection trades distance against risk: flood plains, seismic zones, planned road widening, land tenure. The shortest path is almost never the right one.

Permitting
Right-of-way across ministries, railways, municipalities and private landholders. The slowest phase — and the one that decides whether the project exists at all.

Earthworks
Open-cut where it is safe, horizontal directional drilling where it is not. Rivers, highways and railways are crossed without breaking the surface.

Duct
HDPE subduct laid at 1.2 metres with warning tape, marker posts and chambered access every 500 metres. The duct will outlive three generations of cable.

Cable
Up to 288 fibres blown — never pulled — in two-kilometre sections. Blowing keeps tension off the glass, and tension today is attenuation in ten years.

Splicing
Fusion splicing in a climate-controlled trailer, every joint measured bidirectionally. The tolerance is five hundredths of a decibel. Nothing is rounded up.

Certification
OTDR traces at 1310 and 1550 nm, end-to-end loss budget, chromatic and polarisation-mode dispersion. The span is handed over with its own birth certificate.

Commissioned into the NOC with its baseline optical signature recorded. From this hour the span is watched continuously, for the rest of its working life.
